Our NSW All Stars Team hit the court last Friday living our motto #workhardplayhard. We received reports from the sideline. Although no injuries were sustained there was some battered pride with our PM Jason “Jordon” Kennedy having an off day scoring just a single backboard for the game.
So what is a Toolbox Talk?
A Toolbox Talk is a team gathering where work instructions and health and safety items are discussed. Typically they are an informal setting allowing for everyone in the team to contribute. Most toolboxes are minuted so anyone who rocks up late or is away can read up when they arrive.
At Keece we have 3 types of Toolbox Talks.
Each morning, the onsite team briefly gathers to discuss the day’s work activities with a focus on the work to be completed for the day and any particular precautions that may need to be taken from a safety point of view. In these morning toolboxes, the Keece site supervisor might also relay any new site instructions or issues raised by the other onsite trades or our customers.
2. Company-wide TOOLBOX.
On the 2nd Tuesday morning of every month, at 6.30 am, everyone across Keece, including our NZ team jumps into Teams on their phones or a PC and we do a company-wide toolbox. These sessions focus on any new processes across the business, changes to safe work practices/guidelines, functional health and safety training and the like.
3. Social “TOOLBOX”
Social “Toolboxes” are typically after work, held monthly or bimonthly where everyone in the team catches up for a social activity. Sometimes we raise work topics, but more often than not, the sessions are informal and oriented towards relaxation rather than work. The basketball afternoon led by our “NSW Allstars” is a good example.
Why are toolboxes so important?
Promotes Safety Awareness
- The primary purpose of a toolbox talk for our team is to enhance safety awareness among team members. At Keece, we operate in such fast-paced work environments. Without stopping to think safely, one can easily become focused solely on the task at hand. Toolboxes, particularly prestart toolboxes, allow the team to be proactive in recognizing and addressing potential safety issues. They also provide insight into how these issues might be addressed or even escalated.
Improve Team Communication
- Communication is essential to sustaining efficiency and minimizing the occurrence of errors. It also cultivates a positive environment among our employees. Each toolbox actively encourages open communication, prompting team members to ask questions, share their experiences, and voice any concerns they may have. These conversations foster teamwork, and collective problem-solving and enable everyone to contribute their knowledge and expertise.
Knowledge sharing, skill development and Training
- During toolbox discussions, our team members have the chance to exchange useful information. They can suggest best practices and share insights related to their particular business. Experienced employees can teach others with less experience and help them improve their skills by sharing their knowledge and any lessons they’ve learned. This process of knowledge sharing leads to the growth of our team members, increases proficiency, and ultimately improves the overall performance of the team.
Risk Identification and Mitigation
Toolbox talk allows our team to collaboratively identify potential hazards relating to a particular talk or the entire work environment. After identifying these hazards, the team can then discuss them. Employees effectively discuss how they mitigate the risks by sharing their experiences and knowledge.
Closing the communication loop
- Toolbox talks serve as great opportunities to raise awareness about the importance of safety. They allow open dialogue, share knowledge, and identify potential hazards. By actively conducting them, we give priority, we keep our team engaged, skilled, up to date with current practices, and safety conscious. This, in turn, leads to an increase in productivity, a reduction in accidents, and a better working environment for everyone.
