In February 2022, we were recognized by the NECA Excellence Awards 2020/21 in the Lighting Design & Installation category for the Eastlink Tunnels LED Upgrade project. This award recognizes outstanding achievements across the industry nationally.
This upgrade to whiter lights not only makes passage through tunnels safer for drivers but also provides better-quality images captured by security cameras and greater visibility for emergency workers and incident response units in the tunnel.
A difficult project in trying times
Deemed a project of state significance, despite continual project setbacks with drawing changes, fittings deliveries, COVID lockdown, and team members being quarantined the determination of the team to make sure we completed the project on time remained solid. Every setback was rapidly assessed, consequences determined, and then planned how was to be dealt with and get it done.
In partnership with Lumitex, which supplied the lights, we were responsible for the installation and design.
This job had around 65 technicians on-site and 12 more people working on logistics, administration, and compliance, 22 scissor lifts operating simultaneously to exchange 1,066 high-pressure sodium lamps for 1,174 new Lumitex LED lamps.
The works completed under strict COVID, ConnectEast, and Ventia requirements included:
- the retrofit of 536 HPS light fittings, upgraded to LED
- removal of over 522 fittings and replacement with brand-new LED units
- installation of 98 new LED fittings including new circuits
- change of circuits across more than 50 units for the lighting program
- installation and commissioning of more than 5000+ meters of cable
“The Tunnel Project was a massive team effort. In fact, in my 5+ years at Keece it’s the first project where everyone within the Melbourne office (Projects, Maintenance, Estimating, Admin teams) was involved simultaneously together on a single project and collectively as a team.”
